A Moment Worth Marking

I was caught off guard in the best way after being nominated for the University of Phoenix’s Alumni Luminaries Award. The award recognizes a small group of community standard bearers who illuminate the path for others through innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership, and service.

I share this not as a headline, but as a moment to pause. Recognition like this rarely points to a single achievement. It reflects work done quietly, over time, often without an audience.

The bigger picture

Setting a standard in any field is built through consistency, not visibility. Learning and development works the same way. It takes shape in real time. Through change, through uncertainty, and through moments when the plan shifts and you choose to stay engaged anyway.

Across my career, and in building Empower Pathway Consulting, a few principles have continued to guide me:

  • Lead before the title arrives.

  • Learn continuously, not just formally.

  • Expect disruption and stay steady anyway.

  • Defy assumptions tied to age, background, or timing.

  • Build relationships, not transactions.

  • Repurpose challenge into direction.

  • Choose responsibility over comfort.

None of these arrived fully formed. They were shaped through experience. Often the hard way.

The part worth paying attention to

Progress rarely follows a straight line. Whether you’re navigating growth, building something new, or supporting others through realignment, it is built through discipline, reflection, and the right support at the right moment.

If you work with students preparing for life beyond the classroom, or with those navigating leadership development, transition, or mentorship needs, this is work I care deeply about. I welcome conversations about how these principles can support your students and programs.
